What to Do When You Find Injured WildlifE
STEP 1: Call a Wildlife Hospital
Please call Currumbin Wildlife Hospital if you spot sick, injured, or orphaned native wildlife on (07) 5534 0813.
Your safety is priority, please do not handle:
Snakes, Bats, Adult Koalas, Adult Kangaroos, Wallabies, Birds of prey, Lace Monitors or any other dangerous animals.
STEP 2: TALK IT THROUGH
Once you have called Currumbin Wildlife Hospital:
- You will be asked questions about the animal and the situation.
- The team may ask you to safely contain the animal (e.g. using a towel, t-shirt, placing a washing basket on top, or placing inside a cardboard box).
- You may be asked to bring the animal to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital (and if not possible, perhaps to your local vet).
- You will be asked which suburb you are calling from as that will depend on the most relevant care organisation that may become involved.
Quick tips:
- Native animals can die very quickly from stress, so please keep environment as calm as possible.
- Do not offer any food or water as feeding an animal in shock can be fatal.
- If you find a Kangaroo, Wallaby, Possum, Koala or Wombat that has been injured, make sure you check the pouch (if safe to do so).
