A Special Visit to Honour a Family Legacy
We recently welcomed Alec Hildreth to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary – nephew of our founder, Alex Griffiths. Alec was deeply moved by the visit, praising the Sanctuary’s growth and conservation work, and sharing touching memories of his Uncle’s legacy.
Alec praised the beauty of the Sanctuary and the ongoing dedication to wildlife conservation that continues to drive our work today. From the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital to our conservation programs supporting endangered species, Alec was amazed at how far the Sanctuary has come while still staying true to its roots. Alec passes on his heartfelt thanks to all the staff and volunteers at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) for their ongoing care, passion, and commitment.
One of the most emotional moments of the day came when Alec visited Alex Griffith’s House – the original home of Alex Griffiths, lovingly preserved here at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Village Green. Alec shared memories of time spent there as a child, and was moved to see how respectfully the house has been maintained, standing as a tribute to his Uncle.
A standout moment from the visit was a photograph taken of Alec, Dean and Peyton Hildreth – Alex Griffith’s Newphew, Great Nephew and Great Great Nephew – beside the bronze statue of Alex himself. The likeness between Alec and his Uncle is truly remarkable.
It was a privilege to host Alec and his family. Their visit served as a powerful reminder of how one man’s passion for wildlife created a Sanctuary that now inspires and educates generations of global citizens. Alex’s spirit continues to shape everything we do – and we’re proud to carry that legacy forward.
