What do you know about Koalas?
- Koalas are often mistakenly called bears, but they are actually marsupials. They carry their young in their pouch.
- Koalas eat between 500g – 1kg of Eucalyptus leaves per day! Australia has nearly 900 native Eucalyptus species, but Koalas only enjoy 30 – 40 of these. They use their sensitive noses to detect the leaves they like.
- Their low-energy Eucalyptus diet means Koalas can sleep for up to 20 hours a day!
- Koalas have four thumbs! This helps them to grip onto the trees they climb.
- Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is home to more than 50 Koalas.
Protect Koalas
- Now listed as endangered, Koalas are under threat from habitat destruction, disease, dog attacks and vehicle strikes.
- Many Koala populations are thought to have disappeared or are in serious decline.
- Last year (2021), Currumbin Wildlife Hospital admitted almost 600 Koalas for treatment, rehabilitation and release.
What Can You Do?
- Be a responsible pet owner and keep your pets inside at night.
- Drive slowly near Koala habitats, especially at dawn or dusk when Koalas are most active.
- Protect Koala habitat, even in your own backyard.
- Plant a Koala food tree.
- Donate to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary’s Koala Conservation Program
