Pink Underwing Moth – best dressed for Halloween!
The Pink Underwing Moth might be the coolest looking caterpillar in the world! If you can find one!
In the caterpillar stage, it looks like a regular caterpillar until disturbed, and only then does it show its alien-like 'face' to scare away potential predators.
Once it turns into a moth, its hindwings then turn into the most amazing pink or red and black print!
Where can you find the Pink Underwing Moth?
Fun facts:
- Their wingspan can reach up to 14cm
- It’s believed the caterpillar only eats one particular rainforest plant, the Carronia Vine.
- The moth feeds on soft fruits from rainforest plants
- The moth breeds in Spring and Summer
- They are very rare and hard to find
