Our First Celebrates her Third

Mother Koala Cassidy and her joey Casiopea born into the Koala Chlamydia Vaccine Research

Mother Koala Cassidy and her joey Casiopea born into the Koala Chlamydia Vaccine Research

Cassidy was the first Koala in the Chlamydia Vaccine Research Program to present with a joey and has now had three joeys in two and a half years.

Cooly, Clarence and now Casiopea have all been born into the Vaccine Program, signifying a major milestone for our research.

A Determined Koala

Cassidy joined the Koala Chlamydia Vaccine Research Program after she was found emaciated on the M1 Motorway. Weighing just three-and-a-half kilograms upon her admission to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, Cassidy spent time in the Koala ICU.

Cassidy may not have survived without the special care and treatment from the vet team.

Ethical approval was granted by the Department of Environment and Science to relocate Cassidy to Elanora, so that she would be safely away from the busy M1 and could be part of the population of wild Koalas in the Vaccine Program.

Cassidy falls pregnant for the first time

It was a promising sign when Cassidy first became pregnant with Cooly the Koala, the first joey born into the Vaccine Program.

Cassidy’s second and third joeys, Clarence and Casiopea, soon joined around 30 other joeys born into the Elanora region via this Vaccine Program.

  • 50 Koalas are currently in the Koala Chlamydia Vaccine Research Program, all contributing to the survival of their species.
  • Over 350 Koalas have also been vaccinated against chlamydia.
  • Without intervention, Koalas may become locally extinct by 2050.
