8 Ways to Show Your Support for Save the Koala Month

September is Save the Koala Month and at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, we love Koalas!

There will be a number of ways to get involved with Save the Koala Month at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, to help raise awareness and protect the future of this amazing, endangered Australian species.

Here are 8 ways you can show your support:

1. Visit Our Koala Sanctuary

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is home to more than 50 Koalas!

Although many people call Koalas ‘Koala bears’, Koalas are actually marsupials, meaning they carry their young in their pouch.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a not-for-profit organisation, admission costs go back into research programs, conservation and day to day wildlife care.

2. Learn 5 Koala Fun Facts

There are so many fun facts about Koalas, but we’ve narrowed it down to our top 5:

  • Koalas spend up to 20 hours a day sleeping
  • They eat up to 1kg of eucalyptus leaves per day!
  • Koalas live on average for 6-8 years in the wild but have been known to live up to 15 years!
  • Koala mums are only pregnant for about 35 days, but Joeys can stay in their pouch for up to 6 months.
  • Koalas usually only give birth to one Joey per year but they are capable of giving birth to twins, although this is quite rare.

3. Slow Down During Koala Breeding Season

Spring (September in Australia) marks the start of Koala breeding season, so expect to see more Koalas out and about in the wild. Please slow down on the roads and call Wildcare on (07) 5527 2444 if you find a sick or injured Koala. Currumbin Wildlife Hospital treats more than 500 sick and injured Koalas every year.

4. Learn How Many Koalas Are Left

Koalas are listed as Endangered in Queensland. Without help, the species is at a very serious risk of extinction by 2050.

In 2021, the Threatened Species Scientific Committee (TSSC) estimated that there were only 92,184 Koalas left in the combined Queensland, New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory population.*
