Wild Lives: Episode 3
In this episode of Wild Lives we met up with Alice Roser, Wildlife Supervisor and passionate conservation advocate. Alice looks after native mammals here at the Sanctuary and although she loves all of them, there’s one very special individual she wanted to introduce us to: Grevillea.
Dive into the fascinating story of Grevillea, the Greater Glider, and find out why she truly is one of a kind.
Who is Grevillea?
Grevillea is a very special 11-year-old Greater Glider with a remarkable story. Orphaned at just 4 months old due to tree felling in a large mining area, she was hand-raised until the age of 5 before she was brought to us. While she wasn't able to be released back into the wild, she found a safe and loving home here at the Sanctuary.
What’s even more special, Grevillea is one of fewer than 10 Greater Gliders in human care, making her an incredibly rare and precious animal to come and see.
What are her superpowers?
She’s the unicorn of all Gliders – truly one of a kind, a star and simply an incredibly special individual.
What makes Greater Gliders so unique?
They are Australia's largest gliding species and weigh approximately 1kg, which is amazing that an animal that heavy can glide. They feed solely on Eucalyptus leaves, just like Koalas, and they nest in the hollows of old trees.
What is your favourite thing about Grevillea?
Her beautiful and cheeky personality, she is bossy at times, fussy with her food and loves a tickle under her chin.
Why should people care about Greater Gliders?
They are a unique mammal that receives minimal attention but being Australia’s largest gliding species, they should be seen as a keystone species.
Come and meet Grevillea!
If you haven’t visited Grevillea yet, it’s a must-do! You can visit her at the Repturnal Den (map reference B14). Don’t miss out to get up close with one of nature’s most adorable creatures, just look for the Greater Glider with the lightest coat.
