Patient of the week - Waterbirds

Currumbin Wildlife Hospital admits a huge variety of waterbirds every year including pelicans, sea gulls, ducks, swans and cormorants to name some. One of the most common reasons for waterbirds being admitted to hospital is from injury due to fishing hook and line entanglement. The lucky ones are the birds that people find and can catch to bring to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital for treatment; sadly countless birds in the wild go un-rescued and die from these fishing tackle injuries.

During the holiday season, we get around one patient per day admitted with fishing line or hook entanglement. When a bird swallows the hook they often require abdominal surgery to remove it. When you are out and about this holiday season please dispose of your fishing tackle properly. If you find fishing tackle on the ground please pick it up, if it is left it could seriously harm one of our beautiful, Australian waterbirds. It can take many weeks’ even months to treat and rehabilitate these birds to release back into the wild.

You can help save our wildlife patients by purchasing a Walkways For Wildlife Paver this Christmas as a gift. Please visit www.cwhf.org.au for more information and help save our wildlife!
