- Child koala holding criteria -
Height – Children must be 140cm or taller to be eligible to hold a koala.
Size of Koala – Koalas may vary in size each day, a child may be able to hold a smaller (or female) koala but would not be able to support the weight of a mature male. Due to strict rotation protocols, an alternative time will not be offered in the case that the koala on rotation is not suitable for the child to hold.
Behaviour of the animal – At times koalas may display personality traits or behaviours that suggest that the koala is not suitable to be handled by a child at that present time and cannot be accommodated. Due to strict rotation protocols an alternative time or animal cannot be accommodated.
Confidence of the Child – Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary staff need to be able to determine that the child is confident and willing to hold the koala of their own accord. The child will not be able to proceed if this cannot be determined.
