Macropod Mates

Meet an Australian icon! Kangaroos are big, strong animals that are famous for their powerful locomotion. Kangaroos are larger and prefer to graze in open spaces, while their smaller Wallaby relatives live in more protected areas such as costal heaths, rocky hills or rainforests and eat a variety of native grasses and plants.

Despite their differences, both carry their joeys in a pouch. The smaller species tend to live in family groups, while Kangaroos gather in larger groups called mobs. At Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, you can see many species of Kangaroos and Wallabies in environments that mimic their natural habitats.

Take a stroll through the red soil landscape of Kangaroo Country to feed the Red Kangaroos (food available to purchase from Kangaroo outpost) or visit the grassy fields where the Grey Kangaroos relax.

Fun Fact

On land, Kangaroos hop with their legs stuck together like super-glue, but in water, they're amazing swimmers who can kick each leg separately.

A kangaroo stands on rocky ground, facing the camera with its ears perked up and front paw raised.
