Meet the Grey-Headed Flying Fox - one of Australia's largest bat species. These incredible night-time adventurers have wings that can stretch out as wide as one metre.
Unlike their smaller bat cousins, they don't use echolocation (reflection of sound on their ears) to find their way around - Flying Foxes use enhanced vision to navigate and locate food sources.
Flying Fox numbers are sadly declining, due to land clearing, but these animals are essential to the health of our forest ecosystems. As they travel at night, they pollinate flowers and spread the seeds of many important trees.
We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the greater Yugambeh language region, the Country on which Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Hospital are situated today. We recognise their continuing connections to the land, sky, waters (waterways), and wildlife. We thank them for caring for this Country and its ecosystems.
We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and we pay our respect to Elders past and present.
