Built in 1972, the Dome Aviary was designed by the Sanctuary's founder Dr. Alex Griffiths and was originally a habitat for Cockatoos. Over time, this aviary has housed many different animals including Possums, Lorikeets and even an Australian Lungfish.
In 1996, within this aviary, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary became the first to successfully breed the beautiful Wompoo Fruit-Dove. Today, the aviary is home to the Sacred Kingfisher, Eastern Whipbird, Wompoo Fruit-Dove and Mary River Turtle.
We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the greater Yugambeh language region, the Country on which Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Hospital are situated today. We recognise their continuing connections to the land, sky, waters (waterways), and wildlife. We thank them for caring for this Country and its ecosystems.
We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and we pay our respect to Elders past and present.
