Welcome Home

We are proud to unveil The Tortoise Village – a purpose-built habitat designed to house five critically endangered Radiated Tortoises who have overcome incredible odds to find safety, care, and a second chance at life.

Opening to guests on June 28, this stunning new habitat offers an up-close look at these critically endangered Tortoises – and shares a powerful story of survival, international collaboration, and conservation in action.

Who Lives in the Tortoise Village?

Meet Yoshi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Bowser, and Toad – five Radiated Tortoises (Astrochelys radiata) who were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade after being poached from the wilds of Madagascar.

Cramped into suitcases and trafficked across borders, these tortoises were discovered in appalling conditions before being rescued by authorities. Thanks to the incredible efforts of The Turtle Survival Alliance, Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Garden’s Wild Animal Rescue Centre and support from the Zoo and Aquarium Association of Australasia (ZAA), they were given a second chance.

After arriving in Australia in 2018, the five tortoises found temporary refuge before being moved here and assessed by the world class Veterinarians at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.
Now, they’ve finally moved into their new forever home – and they’re ready to meet you!

Why Radiated Tortoises Need Our Help

Radiated Tortoises are native to southern Madagascar and are recognised for their beautiful star-shaped shell markings. But behind their striking appearance is a sobering reality – they are listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List, with populations plummeting due to habitat loss, poaching, and illegal trade.

In fact, Radiated Tortoises are one of the most heavily trafficked tortoise species on Earth. Without strong conservation action, they risk disappearing forever.

A Habitat Designed for Healing and Hope

The Tortoise Village is more than a habitat – it’s their own sanctuary. Carefully designed to replicate the dry landscapes of southern Madagascar, it provides the space, warmth, and enrichment these tortoises need to thrive.

The project was made possible through a generous community effort, with native landscaping and plants donated by Heritage Acres Currumbin. From sunny basking spots to cool hideaways, every feature of their new home supports the health and wellbeing of these long-living animals.
