The dingo is an iconic Australian animal. It is believed they first arrived in Australia around 5000 years ago via ocean-going seafarers. These descendants of Asiatic wolves play an important role in Australia’s ecosystem by keeping the number of foxes and feral cats down.
A dingo habitat ranges from deserts, to grasslands and the edges of forests. They can use caves, rocky outcrops and hollow logs as a den often close to a water supply.
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is home to two beautiful playful dingoes, Bunjil and Birrayung. Come and see them! They are right in front of the wildlife hospital.
We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the greater Yugambeh language region, the Country on which Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Hospital are situated today. We recognise their continuing connections to the land, sky, waters (waterways), and wildlife. We thank them for caring for this Country and its ecosystems.
We celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and we pay our respect to Elders past and present.
