Alex Griffiths Aviary

    Birds of a Feather

Built in 1972, the Dome Aviary was designed by the Sanctuary's founder Dr. Alex Griffiths and was originally a habitat for Cockatoos. Over time, this aviary has housed many different animals including Possums, Lorikeets and even an Australian Lungfish.

In 1996, within this aviary, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary became the first to successfully breed the beautiful Wompoo Fruit-Dove. Today, the aviary is home to the Sacred Kingfisher, Eastern Whipbird, Wompoo Fruit-Dove and Mary River Turtle.

A small bird with a black crest, white throat patch, and olive-brown body perches on a branch against a blurred green background.

    Fun Fact

The shape of a beehive was Dr. Alex Griffiths' inspiration behind the design of this aviary.
